BioSoil Farm was featured in the Daily Gazette on November 4, 2017:

“GLENVILLE — You’d think a 150,000-strong workforce would be hard to miss, but at Chad Currin’s operation, they’re pretty good at hiding.

Currin is founder and CEO of BioSoil Farms, a soil nutrient company in the Glenville Business and Industrial Park.

BioSoil sells various products to improve the health and productivity of soil, all of them are based on the excretions of 150,000 worms in a series of low bins filled with compost in the back of the shop.

A handful of the night crawlers wriggle along the surface of the muck. A few crawl out onto the floor, dry up and die. But mostly they keep themselves buried in the dark, damp interior of the pile, eating their weight in compost every day.

Within two weeks, they’ll turn a third of a ton of compost in each bin into worm castings, among the most potent of natural fertilizers. Currin and his three human employees scoop it, bag it and sell it. ” read more…

Testing EcoVim to make new kind of plant nutrient

We at BioSoil Farm are very excited to be testing a new machine – a cool machine that will allow us to convert food waste into powdered or granular plant nutrients.

After we extract all the NPK we can from food waste to manufacture our NAKED NUTES we are left with a lot of “solids” which we have been composting the old fashioned way.  As we have ramped up our production we were left with more food waste solids than we could compost onsite so we got this new fangled machine to convert 250lbs of food waste into about 25lbs of granular plant nutrients overnight!

This opens up a huge new opportunity for us and creates a new product for people who love recycled plant nutrients for their farm, garden or grow site.

If this test works out, we would like to grow this area of our business to convert about 2500 lbs of food waste into “fertilizer” every day!

After we make a few test batches we will test this new product and you can be sure we will let you know how it works!

More uses for waste food products…. we love it!

BioSoil Farm’s Naked Nutes Line featured in Cannabis Magazine

BioSoil Farm line of Cannabis growing nutrients (fertilizer) “Naked Nutes” was just featured in Cannabis Magazine.

There is a farm in upstate New York that produces an all-nature super food for plants and soil that is gaining traction within the organic cannabis farming community. Founded by Chad Currin, BioSoil Farm’s, located in Glenville, NY, converts compost into a line of completely organic liquid and solid nutrient products that feed the soil to in-turn feed the plant.

BioSoil Farms’ Naked Nutes brand relies on the company’s custom bread night crawlers, specially engineered for their excrement.  For two weeks, these worms consume an organic, vegan diet sourced from what would otherwise be wasted grain, converting it into premium quality worm castings  (i.e. worm poop). Worm castings act as a soil conditioner that helps break down other nutrients in the soil to make nutrients readily available for plant uptake.

Benefits of Organic Nutrients

Organic nutrients offer several benefits over synthetic nutrients for cannabis growing. Organics typically are slower releasing, reducing the risk of overfeeding and nutrient burn. Organic nutrients also have a beneficial effect on microorganisms, which are needed for healthy plant growth. Since organic nutrients are made from natural substances, they provide a more sustainable environment and are overall better for the planet’s carbon footprint.

When compared to synthetic nutrients, organic nutrients improve the growth and health of your plants over time, while reducing nutrient run-off. It also enhances the flavor of the final product, a difference that many organic farmers say you can taste and smell in the finished product. Some growers and medicinal customers also prefer organically grown cannabis, as no chemicals are present to potentially enter your body when consumed.

In terms of drawbacks, organic fertilizers usually take longer to be absorbed by the plant, as the microorganisms that break down nutrients takes some time. In colder climates, these microorganisms work even slower breaking down nutrients, making organic growing less of a precise science and harder to manage…. Governor Cuomo makes protecting New York Lake’s from Algal Bloom a Priority – BioSoil Farm has the solution

Governor Cuomo Unveils 12th Proposal of 2018 State of the State: Protecting New York’s Lakes From Harmful Algal Blooms

New York Governor Andrew M Cuomo makes protecting New York’s Lakes from Harmful Algal Blooms one of the priorities for New York State in 2018.  We at BioSoil Farm are thrilled to have part of the solution he is looking for.

Algal Blooms – large swatches of algae – in New York Lakes grow out-of-control and suck all the oxygen out of the body of water killing fish and plants and making it poisonous to drink.

While the Governor addressed one potential cause, phosphorus, but the main culprit is synthetic nitrogen over-used on fields to grow the food we eat.  Both nitrogen and phosphorous are over-applied by farms, golf courses and other commercial growing operations.  They are forced to over apply because the synthetic fertilizers, pesticides and herbicides have killed all the soil biology so the microbes in the soil are not there to “fix” nutrients and make them plant ready.  As a result they apply incredibly outsized doses most of which never affects the plant or plant growth and is simply toxic run-off.

BIOSOIL FARM NUTRIENT SYSTEMS PROVIDE THE SOLUTION to PREVENTING ALGAL BLOOMSFertilizers, a Boon to Agriculture, Pose Growing Threat to U.S. Waterways

The BioSoil Farm Nutrient Systems can be, at least, a good part of the solution.

BioSoil Farm’s Nutrient Systems are far different from conventional fertilizers, pesticides and herbicides.  BioSoil Farm solutions replenish the key microbes and fungi needed for healthy soil and plant and vegetable growth.  This allows much lower levels of plant nutrients Nitrogen (N), Phosphates (P) and Potassium (K) because the healthy soil, super-charged with a living soil web is able to maximize the efficiency of low-dose nutrients.

Our special blend of microbes and fungi fix themselves to the roots of the plants  in very large numbers, increasing plants access to a greater amount of the applied solutions.  The microbes then fix the nutrients and excrete them right into the root of the plant.  This is a highly efficient system meaning no over-dosing is required and ensuring that the majority of what is applied actuaally makes it into the plant and not into the soil run-off to lakes, rivers and streams.

At BioSoil Farm we also make all our plant nutrients out of recycled nutrients so that everything we sell is recycled and not made from virgin materials.  We collect thousands of pounds of waste food every week from food banks, restaurants and grocery stores and using a variety of low-energy processes we convert waste food into fertilizer. We are super committed to using only sustainable inputs and making the very best plant nutrients available.  Many people have found that using our low-dose plant nutrient system actually increases yield by upto 30%! ….oh yeah…plus it saves our Environment!

Worm Casting Application Rates

The weather outside may be “frightful” but many of you are starting to thing about Spring Planting Season and our phones are ringing off the hook!  Worm Castings “are big right now” with so many people realizing the value of adding worm castings to their soil to help build the soil food web and growing great plants!

We sell to family gardeners and commercial farms.  We sell to turf grass growers.  We sell to grape farmers, cannabis farms, tomato farms and so much more!

Already this morning we have had two calls from people who are interested in using worm castings to improve their crop quality and yield who were wondering “how much worm casting they needed to buy to treat their soil, so I thought that “worm casting application rates” would make a good topic for today’s post.

There tend to be three ways that people apply worm castings and three types of soil they are trying to amend.  The general “rule of thumb for worm casting application rates” is that it should make up 15%-20% of the soil mass.  This works out to be about 1/2 lb of worm castings per square foot of soil or 1/2 pound per plant if applying directly in with the root ball when transplanting.

This of course, is for decent quality soil.  If the soil is nutrient deficient or if it is heavy clay or very sandy the application rate doubles to about 1lb per square foot or 1 pound per plant at transplanting.

Not interested in doing the worm castings application rate math?? Here is a basic chart to help you:

Bio Booster for Plants

$

0

As interest in organic, all-natural farming and gardening increases, we are getting a lot of interest from people who are looking to build the soil biology of their soil.  We get calls and emails asking how our products help as a bio booster for soil and plants.

WHY DOES SOIL BIOLOGY MATTER? First, before explaining how each of our products in a plant or soil “bio booster” let’s explore why soil biology matters.

BASICALLY…. the more biology in the soil – microbes and fungal matter – the better the soil will be able to feed whatever plant you are going.

MORE SOIL BIOLOGY MEANS BIGGER, STRONGER, HEALTHIER PLANTS!

THere are lots of organism and microorganisms in soil that help plants with everything they do.  Most importantly, microbes break down plant nutrients in the soil and “fix it” or convert it to make it plant ready.  There are lots of nutrients in the soil but not in the form plants need to injest them.  Plus, we add lots of nutrients to the soil, but without these wonderful microorganisms in the soil there is nothing to help those nutrients get converted into plant ready forms.  This is one reason why most of the nitrogen and phosphates people add to the soil never get into the plant and are just wasted money.

Premium Worm Castings – Our premium worm castings are specially created using specialty worms (night crawlers) to infuse the worm castings with all the microorganisms soil needs to “fix” plant nutrients and make them plant ready.

Encapsulated Worm Castings – Our EWC’s – or encapsulated worm castings – have the same microbial benefit as our Premium Worm Castings , but they are super-charged with micro and macro nutrients AND the microbes to “fix” those nutrients and make them plant ready.

Pelletized Worm Castings – Our Pelletized worm castings are the same as our premium worm castings except that they have been pelletized so that they work with a commercial drop spreader or broadcast spreader.

Liquid Plant Nutrients – NAKED NUTES, MAXALIZER and WT-30 (Worm Tea) – All of our liquid nutrients are made using microbes extracted from our premium worm castings and then cold-brewed to increase the microbial counts.

So matter which BioSoil Farm product you choose, each will increase the soil biology – acting as a bio booster for the plants and soil, helping build strong plants and root bases and making the plant able to best fight off disease and pests.
